Objective

Dangers of working with hydrocarbons and flammable refrigerants and identifying hazards.

Regulations for the installation, servicing and de-commissioning of hydrocarbon and flammable RAC systems.

Hazards and safe working practices for the recovery, storage and transportation of recovered refrigerants.

Recovery of refrigerant and oil and preparation for disposal.

Methodology

The main theory subject areas are listed below:

Dangers of working with hydrocarbons and flammable refrigerants and identifying hazards

Regulations for the installation, servicing and de-commissioning of hydrocarbon and flammable RAC systems

Hazards and safe working practices for the recovery, storage and transportation of recovered refrigerants

Properties of hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerants, their advantages and disadvantages and typical applications.

Understanding the differences between halocarbon and hydrocarbon RAC systems including identification of components and system features unique to hydrocarbon systems.

Plan and prepare for work on hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerant RAC systems – risk assessments, appropriate tools and PPE, and establishment and maintenance of a safe area.

Servicing and maintaining hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerant RAC systems.

Installing and testing hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerant RAC systems including leak and strength testing, evacuation and dehydration.

Re-commissioning procedures for hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerant RAC systems.

Safe handling of hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerants including charging and recovery.

Safe storage and transportation of hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerants.

Recovery of refrigerant and oil and preparation for disposal

This course covers all Hydrocarbon refrigerants, including handling of A3 hydrocarbons including R1270 Propylene, R290 Propane and R600a Isobutane.

It is also suitable for engineers working with flammable HFO’s and HFC’s including R1234yf, R1234ze and R32.

Our course has recently been updated to include A2L and A3 flammable gases.

Content

A presentation/discussion session will reinforce the theory. The assessment will be a mixture of a practical test and a multiple choice, written question paper. Full course notes will be provided in advance
